Q: I wanted to ask your advice... I have been breastfeeding my baby who is 10 months old now and I am wanting to start using a formula. I believe you stock Babynat - do you recommend I use this or are there other brands I should use. I am also worried about availability - I don't want to start on a formula only to not be able to get it after a while.. I am also unsure of whether the organic formulas contain the right amount of vitamins & minerals compared to conventional formulas... can you comment?
A: I understand your anxiety as we were in exactly the same boat!
We started Isabella on the Holle, Organic Infant Goat Milk Follow-on Formula, from 6 months. Goat Milk is the closest to mother's milk and no doubt that organic formulas should be your first choice (no pesticides/ hormones; no sugar/salt etc). You can buy this formula online from the Fresh Earth Food Store. So availability should not be a problem. Alternatively you could consider fresh goat milk.
Once your baby has started a pattern of eating, offer breast milk as an after-meal drink only. This is particularly important at breakfast time. Giving food first not only encourages good eating habits, but after a night's sleep may form the largest meal. As your baby gets older he will reduce his own milk intake as his food intake increases.
Isabella is now 15 months old and I breastfeed morning and evening only and we occasionally give her a bottle of formula during the day (usually when she is teething and not comfortable to eat.)
I hope this helps.
Q: Thanks for the advice. So I take it you are not so keen on Babynat formula?? Is there a reason? I don't suppose you have a full ingredient list of the Holle formula as the website doesn't show it or if you know how I can get one?
A: I personally don't know Babynat and I also prefer goats' milk to cows'. Herewith the info you requested:

Important Information: Breastfeeding is ideal for your baby. We recommend that you inform yourself about the priorities of breastfeeding by talking to a specialist. (doctor, dietician, pharmacist, early childhood centre).
Sometimes infant formulas are not suitable due to your baby being lactose intolerant. As cow milk and goat milk have partially the same proteins an allergic reaction or intolerance can occur to both milks. However in many cases, children react to certain cow milk proteins which are not found in goat milk, therefore, goat milk can be a natural alternative.
