Q: Hi I learned of Sodium Saccharin and Sodium Cyclamates in a book covering the causes of cancer by a certain Dr Paavlo Airola (I am not certain about his name)who stated that these 2 chemical substances should not be consumed by humans and at that time was considered not good for human useby the FDA.
However the Dr. noted that these sweeteners are widely used because being much cheaper than sugar etc. I noted that on the front of Canderel Sweetener holders were printed the words "Do not contain Sodium Cyclamate or Sodium Saccharin". Not any more. My concern is are these substances safe for human consumption or not. I learned that Hamburgers are junk food but can not understand why because my mom made us Hamburgers containing the following: Wholewheat bun, 100% pure beef patty, Gerkins, Tomato, Lettuce, Onions etc. Definitale not unhealthy in my opinion! Maybe the problem lies with the Sauce containing all kinds of unhealthy substances. Another thing I noted was that most of the woman that got cancer were in actual fact the "Health Conscious" ones. The ones drinking diet cooldrinks and eating all kinds of processed "Less Fat" and "Fat Free" products which contains these "chemical substances" like Sodium Sacharin and Sodium Cyclamates. Once upon a time it was unusual to buy cordial concentrates with recommended mixtures exceeding 1 part concentrate + 3 parts water like Oros still has. Nowadays you get mixes of 1 + 12 and even more. Most of these contain these 2 chemical sweeteners. The Dr. suggested that using these chemicals can be regarded the same as putting sweetening Agricultural Fertilizers in your colddrink. Outrageous if you think of it that way. No wonder the women drinking Sugar Free colddrinks gets Cancer. They are putting fertilizer into their bodies and after a while their bodies cannot cope any longer and the scars get cancerous. ( My opinion)
If you perhaps know something in this regard please let me know. In the mean time I keep my family off these 2 Chemicals.
A: Let me start by stating that we do not stock any products containing these sweeteners as they are devoid of any nutrients. We are a natural food store and subscribe to eating wholefoods and organic where possible. Food is our medicine and we do not subscribe to anything unnatural or modified.
The research you refer to was done in the mid 60's and rats were fed these sweeteners well above normal human consumption levels. Carcinogen activity was found in the bladder of the rats, but over the years, when these test were repeated, nothing conclusive was found.
Today Saccharin is considered safe by the FDA. Cyclamate is banned in the USA, but used in 44 other countries. Both are considered safe by EU standards.
Research is currently being done on the effects of Cyclamate on testicular health.
Bottom line, continue to read and question your food labels and keep it as natural way as possible.
