Q:
my baby is 3 months old and suffers from severe stomach cramps as soon as he drinks any (formula) milk other than goat's milk. the only goat's milk that I could find to thus far, is Alpi goat's milk powder. I find that these tins are expensive (R90 for 400g), especially since he's a very eager feeder who finishes such a tin of milk in about 2-3 days. are there any more cost effective options available, such as fresh goat's milk?!

A:
Goats don't express milk from beginning July until, latest, mid September as they are pregnant. It may therefore be difficult to find fresh goats milk during these months.

We do however have a limited amount of goats milk (fresh) in our freezer at present. We stock Mooiland 1L for R12.75.

We also stock Holle Goatsmilk Formula, but it is more expensive than the Alpi goats milk and difficult to come by.

this was my experience when I farmed with Milk goats. We raised our eldest grandchild on goats milk and she grew wonderfully and is beautiful now. She is 8yrs old.

Goat's milk (as opposed to goat's milk formula, and even that is fourth-rate) is not only inadequate for infant feeding, but could be dangerous because of its imbalance of nutrients for human babies, let alone the lack of human immune factors. If breastfeeding doesn't come easily, seek help from a lactation consultant or La Leche League

Mis-information on lactating goats. Goat's milk is in FULL supply during the months of April through Oct. This is when the supply is the most. A doe will be pregnant through the winter months and the supply is only cut off for three months. If a doe gets pregnant in September she will kid in February. Their gestation is only 5 months. If you are looking for fresh goats milk contact a local farmer on localharvest.org and look in your area.
