Your pedometer is a great motivational tool. Using a pedometer for the first time is a real eye-opener - now you can actually know how many steps a day you are taking.
This information can be used to make gradual changes to your lifestyle and assist you to reach the goal of 10 000 steps per day.
The 10 000 steps programme originated in Japan in the 1960's - they were the first to use simple electronic pedometers to track the activity levels of the population. Dr Yoshiro Hatano is credited with developing the concept that, if his fellow citizens took 10 000 steps per day, they would become healthy citizens. In fact the Japanese word for pedometer is "manpo-kei" which means "10 000 step machine". Today the 10 000 step concept is widely recognised and there are 10 000 step programmes in most countries.
Research has shown that most adults only take between 3000 and 5000 steps a day, but with our increasingly sedentary lifestyles this figure is falling annually. Using a pedometer focuses your attention on how many steps you take in a day rather than how many minutes of exercise you do in a session
