Ear Candles
What is it:
A hollow tube made from pure beeswax and natural linen, that when inserted into the ear, and lit on the opposite end, produces a vacuum effect that draws wax from the ear.
Benefits and Uses:
Burning Ear Candles is said to create a vacuum effect within the ear, thereby pulling wax from the ear.
The associated warmth and smoke generated during the procedure is said to soften the ear wax, and gently stimulate the ear canal.
This is deemed much safer and less invasive than sticking a Q tip into the ear. Q tips should never go beyond the outer rim of the ear canal, as it can not only compact wax and debris further, but could also scratch and damage the eardrum.
The Ear Candling Instructions are Simple:
It is advised that one never do ear candling alone. Because it involves hot wax, and fire, it only makes sense to have someone assist with the procedure.
• You may put almond oil into the ears the night before, to loosen the earwax.
• Make a hole in a paper plate or foil, and insert the ear candle through the hole. This protects your head from falling wax.
• Fit the one end of the ear candle snugly in your ear canal, so that no smoke escapes from the base when it is lit.
• Lie on your side. You may keep a damp towel handy in case of falling wax.
• Let your assistant light the far end of the candle, provided it is vertical, and at right angles to your head.
• Once the candle has burnt 7cm from your head, your assistant must remove it, and extinguish the flame in a cup of water.
• Clean the outer earlobe with a Q tip.
