Picture getting a prescription from your doctor for broccoli, garlic and wheatgrass. This is the scenario that scientists are predicting, as more and more phytochemicals are found in food.
| Phytochemicals are lively compounds in food that prevent disease. Indoles, found in cabbage and Brussels sprouts, have anti-cancer properties. Chlorophyll, in green plants, helps oxygenate the blood and improve energy. Allicin, in garlic and spring onions, boosts the immune system. These are just three of hundreds of commonly occurring phytochemicals in nature’s pharmacy.
Many of these are not considered essential nutrients as our lives do not depend on them, yet they do impact on the chemistry of the body and our health as significantly as vitamins and minerals do. Many foods contain a combination of these health-promoting phytochemicals and essential nutrients. |
Instead of using pharmaceutical drugs with undesirable side-effects, the medicine of tomorrow is turning to nature’s pharmacy of nutrients - to correct the body’s chemistry and restore wellbeing. Every time you eat living foods, fruit and vegetables you take in a cocktail of essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, enzymes and phytochemicals that work together synergistically to advance your health. The idea of separating each ingredient and treating it like an individual drug to cure a specific illness is not only impractical, it is nonsensical.
Superfoods are superfoods by the virtue of their mineral, nutrient and energetic makeup. They are raw wholefoods, not fractionalised supplements. This means that the minerals, vitamins and nutrients are easily recognised, absorbed and utilised by the body. That’s what makes them super! They vibrate at a different and higher level altogether.
They are the power your body is looking for in food…the power you don’t always give it! Abundant health

| By Hannah Kaye, Nutritional Therapist It's usually fairly obvious if a food item is healthy. | | What makes a Superfood SUPER?
They come from the world’s highest, most dense and most energetic places: the Amazon rainforest, the top of the Andes Mountains, the foothills of the Himalayas, the shores of beaches and island landscapes, and even sun-drenched African soils.
This is the treasured knowledge and these are the revered foods of many ancient cultures. In fact, within many of these cultures these foods are regarded as medicines –
Beryn Daniel Natural Medicine July 2009
| An apple or a sprig of rocket: healthy. A double bacon cheeseburger: not so much. What isn't so obvious, however, is if a food is exceptionally healthy. These foods have become known as "superfoods".
In his book, Superfoods: The Food and Medicine of the Future, David Wolfe lists the top 10 superfoods as: 1. Goji berries 2. Cacao 3. Maca 4. Bee products 5. Spirulina 6. Blue-green algae 7. Marine Phytoplankton 8. Aloe Vera 9. Hempseed 10. Coconuts |
This is because all of the above are powerful sources of clean protein, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, good fats and oils, essential fatty and amino acids, and other nutrients.

Dr Annelise Bunce, homeopathic doctor and Certified Clinical Metal Toxicologist uses Biopuncture in her practice. | Biopuncture can be seen as the bridge between natural and mainstream medicine with roots in both worlds. It is a modern medical technique because it uses a Western style diagnosis with products rigorously tested for safety and reliability. Biopuncture can also be considered natural medicine because the biotherapeutics used, have no major side effects since it stimulates natural healing instead of suppressing the symptoms.

Acai Berry Powder
The acai berry (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) is a fruit that grows on the acai palm trees in the Amazon rain forest of Brazil. It is dark purple in color and about the size of a grape. It is extremely rich in nutrients. Natives of the Amazon region have made this berry a major part of their diet for hundreds of years. Approximately 10% of the berry contains edible pulp and skin and the remaining 90% is the seed or pit. Most of the nutrients come from the pulp and skin and the seed is normally not eaten. The fruit tastes like a vibrant mix of berries and chocolate. With rich nutrients and great taste, it is not surprising that this food is becoming extremely popular. |
