F&R Fennel Seeds
F&R Fennel Seeds are organic, and come from the plant Foeniculum vulgare, one of the world's oldest spice plants. They are used for their diverse therapeutic effects, as well as culinarily, for their distinctive licorice-like flavour.
Their aroma and taste is similar to, yet not as potent as, aniseed and star anise. Fennel seeds are commonly used in Italian sausages and meat ballssss (make your own with soya mince, tofu, eggs, and stone ground flours), northern European rye breads, and Indian curries.
Fennel seeds have carminative properties and are taken to ease flatulence and bloating. A teaspoon of weak, cool fennel tea (gripe water) may alleviate colic in infants. Fennel seeds are chewed after meals to prevent bad breath, and their use as a galactague (to stimulate milk production) is widely recommended by midwives.
It is also said to be a useful tonic for the eyes to improve eyesight, and an effective diuretic. A practical application is to keep fleas away by sprinkling fennel seeds in your pets kennels.
Please note that fennel seeds contain compounds that act as phytoestrogens, and may encourage menstruation. They are therefore not recommended in high doses during pregnancy.
