By Dr Danny PillayWhy is a healthy colon so important? The colon together with the skin, lungs and kidneys, is responsible for elimination of toxins and waste products. A poor diet and irregular bowel motion results in the accumulation of these toxins and waste in the colon crevices. These toxins and waste are then absorbed by the colon and enter the bloodstream, affecting the entire body causing health problems and diseases.
What is Colon Hydrotherapy? It is the use of water for internal cleansing of the colon without the use of drugs and chemicals. It is similar to an enema, but treats the entire colon. Is Colon Hydrotherapy different to taking a laxative or having an Enema?Laxatives irritate the lining of the colon causing watery stools. Enemas clear out the lower part of the colon and rectum. Colon Hydrotherapy is a gentle infusion of water in the approximately 1.2m length of the colon and results in the complete elimination of impacted faecal matter from the colon.
Is Colon Hydrotherapy contra-indicated for any conditions?Yes, Colon Hydrotherapy is not done on patients who have:
- Cancer of the colon or gastro-intestinal tract
- Diverticulitis
- Acute abdominal pain
- Recent history of gastro-intestinal bleeding or heart disease
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Aneurysms
- Epilepsy
How is it done?A sterile speculum is inserted into the rectum and it attached to a tube that allows warm filtered water to enter the colon. Another tube is then attached to the speculum through which the waste product is removed and passes directly into the sewerage system. All materials used are disposable and therefore ensure hygiene and safety. The patient’s dignity and comfort is always considered.
What water is used for Colon Hydrotherapy?Tap water is used, but the water is passed through a filtration and heating system that removes chemicals and bacteria and thus makes it safe for use in colon irrigation.
How many treatments?A session usually lasts for 45 minutes to an hour depending on the individual. A complete beneficial treatment should consist of 3 to 5 sessions. A full treatment is recommended 2 to 3 times a year.
What should one do to prepare for Colon Hydrotherapy session? For at least three days prior to a session, eat primarily a liquid vegetarian diet and avoid all processed foods.
Does one experience any discomfort after a Colon Hydrotherapy session?Usually no, but some people experience nausea and fatigue due to the loosening of debris and toxins in the colon.
Is Intestinal Flora Supplementations necessary?Yes, this re-establishes the healthy population of good bacteria that is essential for normal function and wellbeing.
Is it possible to cause injury by using too much water pressure? No, the Colon Hydrotherapy unit operates on a gravitational system and it is therefore not possible for excess pressure to develop.
