F&R Indian Black Salt
What is it: Black Salt, also known as Kala Namak, is a culinary salt that mined from mineral rich volcanic rock in India. It has a distinctive pinkish-brown colour, and being that it is naturally rich in sulfur, it has a strong egg-like smell.
Benefits and Uses: Black salt is traditionally added in some Indian chutneys, pickled snacks, and savoury goods. It can be sprinkled onto pieces of apple or banana for a tasty desert, or can be used in place of table salt. Note that it tastes nothing like table salt, and is an acquired taste.
We recommend it for vegan recipes that would other whys require egg as a major ingredient. Try “Egg” mayonnaise salads, or scrambled “egg” made from tofu.
In ayerdedic medicine, Black Salt is considered to have a cooling effect on the body, and is often used therapeutically to treat bad eyesight, bloating, flatulence, heartburn, and constipation.
It is rich in iron which may be useful for anaemia, sulfur which has regenerative, and healing qualities, and many other trace minerals. It is believed that Black Salt does not raise sodium levels in the body, and is thus safe for people with high blood pressure.
