Earth Chick peas
What is it: Chickpeas (Cicer arietinum), or garbanzo beans, are an edible legume with a smooth texture, and slightly nutty flavour. Earth Chickpeas are organically farmed, and dried. Chickpeas are typically grown in the Mediterranean, western Asian, the Indian subcontinent, and Australia.
Benefits and Uses: Chickpeas are high in protein, and insoluble plus soluble fibre. This makes them a healthy choice of carbohydrate for diabetics. They are also rich in folic acid, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, molybdenum, manganese, and copper.
This wonderful cocktail of nutrients may be the reason why chickpeas have been shown to lower cholesterol, and help prevent cardiovascular disease.
Combine chickpeas with a whole grain, and you will enjoy the benefits of a high quality protein meal, ideal for vegetarians and vegans.
Chickpeas can be prepared in a variety of ways. They taste great after being sprouted for a few days, and added raw to salads and stir fries. Alternatively, prepare them by rinsing, soaking over night, and then boiling them for approximately 1 hour. Soaking them increases digestibility, and shortens cooking times.
Once cooked, this versatile bean can be mixed into cold salads, or prepared in soups, stews, curries and stir fries. We also recommend making falafel balls, or a tasty hummus dip.
