Matthew Ballenden
Matthew Ballenden graduated in Food & Beverage Management (Wits Technicon Hotel School) and specialises as a nutritional chef. He has extensive experience in food retail operations and franchising.
Matthew founded: ‘Ballenden Caterers’ in 1994, comprising of 3 food trailers contracted to the building industry. He then joined the:‘Baron & Quail’ in 1995 working his way up from Chef to Senior Management at the Barons Group. In 1997 Matthew opened the: ‘Baron & Beaver’ as an Operating Partner and General Manager, selling his shares in 1998. He thereafter consulted to numerous restaurants including the opening of the: ‘Baron & Farrier’ and the ‘Mail Room’.

During 2000/1, as General Manager of Operations for the ‘Mugg & Bean’, Matthew successfully opened 24 Stores nationwide, working closely with industry guru Ben Filmater. After leaving Mugg & Bean Franchising, Matthew pursued his interest/ passion in nutritional cooking and natural and Organic retailing. Matthew started a company called Organic-2-Go in 2002, that specialised in Organic catering, baking and retailing. After leaving Organic-2-Go Matthew joined Fruits & Roots in Bryanston as a chef/manager after which he opened his own Fruits & Roots in Emmarentia in 2004.
In November 2008, Matthew rebranded Fruits & Roots Emmarentia to Fresh Earth Food Store. Apart from the day to day running of the company Matthew teaches nutritional cooking and gives cooking demonstrations to schools and corporates with an emphasis on maintaining the nutritional value of the ingredients as well as making the food tasty.

Danny Pillay
Registered homeopath and practitioner in traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, Dr Danny Pillay has more than 15 years’ practical experience in the medical industry.
Based in Parkmore, Sandton, he is a frequent lecturer and guest speaker at a range of functions.
A fundamental part of his practice is nutritional advice which he believes to be the cornerstone to reversing disease as well as maintaining good health. Dr Pillay promotes a mainly vegetarian based lifestyle that ensures not only vitality but also reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Jacqueline Wildish
Jacqueline Wildish is a certified Nutritional Therapist. With time spent in London, studying under the renowned Patrick Holford, she qualified, from the respected British College of Nutrition and Health. She is also an active member of the South African Association for Nutritional Therapy.
Jackie’s informative articles can seen in our monthly newsletters, she’s a regular expert on Great Expectations and is a guest speaker at various functions.

Karen Van Der Merwe
After completing her Bachelor of Arts degree (majoring in Communications and Sociology) at the University of Johannesburg, Karen van der Merwe obtained a post graduate diploma in Media Management at the AAA School of Advertising. The next destination was Boston, USA where she attended Northeastern University for a diploma in Photography.
Karen started her career in communications with the re-branding team of London fashion house Burberry but advertising beckoned and she joined a small agency working on international brands such as Revlon, Ultima and Almay and Lloyds of London.

Returning to South Africa after 5 years abroad, she joined Joe Public JHB as Account Manager on CTM. Next up was The Jupiter Drawing Room where she served Nedbank, Nu Metro (Africa), Peermont Global (Emperors Palace) and various pro-bono projects for children’s charities, plus taking responsibility for the agency’s web development.
Karen accepted the position of Marketing Manager at Emperors Palace and with the blessing of The Jupiter Drawing Room, spent the next year on the Client side, gaining valuable experience and a new perspective. She returned to the agency side as Client Service Director at Cross Colours, working on brands such as Nando’s SA and UK, Subaru SA, Mineworkers Investment Company, Group Five, Oracle, Virgin Money SA, Brait, PKF, Moro Moo, Peter Lindenberg Racing and Pure Sport Travel. As General Manager and Client Service Director at MetropolitanRepublic, Karen dedicated herself to the success of this rapidly expanding new agency and its exciting portfolio of clients: MTN, Incredible Connection and Faritec, bringing her diverse experience of marketing and communications to an already innovative blend of minds.
Today, referred by many in the industry as “Isabella’s Mother” Karen divides her time between Cross Colours, Alzheimer’s South Africa and Fresh Earth Food Store on a freelance basis.
